HISTORY BEHIND THE CI MARATHON

The origins of the Marathon lie in Christmas Island folklore beginning in 1992 as a wager between Island Hash House since growing to become an internationally listed event. Competitors may choose to run or walk the course in both the full and half Marathons. The scenic and challenging multi terrain marathon course starts at the top of the island plateaux 260m above sea level running along roads, trails and through Tropical Rainforests down to and along the rugged Island Coastline finishing at Flying Fish Cove.

TESTIMONIALS

EVENTS

Each track holds a unique opportunity to experience Christmas Island like never before. Our Full and Half marathon tracks are a challenging cross country adventure! The tracks are a combination of road and multi terrain trails.

The 5km Dash starts and returns to scenic Flying Fish Cove, whilst the 2km stroll held each year with a fancy dress theme for the kids, sees mums & dads with strollers, Cowboys, Indians, Super Heroes, and Aliens head to and return from the centre of town.

Albeit an event that has attracted competitors from afar as the United Kingdom, USA, New Zealand and across Australia, the Christmas Island Marathon retains a community feel with events and activities that are fun, inclusive and achievable.

1st – 2nd – 3rd place category awards are given as well as for Male, Female and Masters (50+) for the 21.1km solo and team events including the Walk the Course event.

The Walk the Course event is as named and the requirement is simply no running not adhering to Race Walking stipulations regarding the straight leg rule a foot

This event, although inclusive of awards for 1st, 2nd & third place including M/F & Masters categories, allows participants regardless of competitiveness to simply enjoy the experience attracting groups of friends, couples as well as those out to challenge the clock.

The Open Team Relay is also aimed to provide a fun, and social challenge event with no set change over distances as long as feet are continuously on the ground at points at relay changes.

All the events finish at the Islands iconic Flying Fish Cove.

Testimonials

  • Although it's a small community, CI residents must be the friendliest people in the world which makes this marathon uniquely special. Running through the rainforest was a treat, as was exploring this magical place during the rest of the time I was there.

  • The CI marathon is my favourite running event to date. It seemed like the whole island was out there cheering everyone on, even if you weren't a local. Such a fun vibe the whole way along the course. Massive shout out to the relay team who found me a block of ice when I was overheating, the lovely lady and her son who gave me a hydralyte icy pole and the AFP for those lollies, you guys embodied the community spirit that day!

    Stephanie, Perth WA

  • This is a unique marathon, with large sections going through pristine jungle. The event organisation was superb and had a real community atmosphere, from the Carb night to the medal presentations. Thanks to all involved :)
